What Makes Sustainable Clothing, And Where To Find It
Sustainable clothing is a direction in which the human race needs to move if we are to retain our standard of living into the future, and leave a better world for our children. Environmental issues are often headline news, but there is far more written and said about energy, food production, and even the materials used in the construction industry than there ever is about sustainable clothes. This is something of a mistake, as clothes are a completely necessary part of everyday life, and we need to ensure that we manufacture and dispose of them responsibly.
One way of cutting down on the waste created by the continuous buying and disposing of clothes is to buy second hand, possibly from one of the consignment shops which will sell goods on behalf of other people. This solution will obviously not suit everybody, and in the long term it does nothing to address the problem of how to manufacture and recycle clothes using sustainable materials, but it is a solution which will have its devotees. It is a solution which will allow you to wear a better quality of clothing than if you were buying new, assuming that you are on a limited budget.
A more permanent and sustainable solution is the one which is offered by companies which use a fiber to fiber methodology to actually recycle old garments and create new ones. With the old system of buying second hand clothes, there was obviously a limit on the life of the item of clothing. With this system, the item's materials are recycled when its life is over, providing a far more durable lifespan for the material itself. This creates genuine sustainability for the raw material, and is a long term solution to clothing needs.
Incredibly, there is even a system by which the old discarded plastic bottles used in the drink industry can be recycled into plastic clothing. This is only a partial solution, as the plastic itself is not fully sustainable, but it certainly extends the life and usefulness of a material which is manufactured prolifically throughout the world. There is still a need for the human race to move away from a dependence on plastic as a container for drink, but for now we can at least make it more useful over a longer period of time.
A technology which has a greater long term potential is a fiber known as Tencel. This fiber is produced from the cellulose in plant cells, and is therefore fully sustainable. If the production process is fuelled with renewable energy, there is no reason why this technology cannot produce fully sustainable clothing indefinitely into the future. The disposal process is also consistent with full sustainability, as the fiber is fully bio-degradable. This fiber, and the technology associated with it, represents a major breakthrough in the quest for sustainable clothing.
