What Constitutes Sustainable Flooring, And Where To Source It
Sustainable flooring is something which should be fitted in every home, and there are many options available to allow you to do this. Which option will be the right one for you will depend on the type and size of home you have, on its location and climatic considerations, and to a large degree on personal choice. While wood is the obvious choice, it is by no means the only option available, so take your time to make sure that you get the choice right. Even if you do choose wood, there are factors to consider which are not immediately apparent.
Wood can look extremely aesthetic if it is chosen and fitted with care. No-one wants to decorate their home in a way which will not be pleasing to the eye, so don't allow environmental considerations to cloud your judgement. There is simply no need to anyway, as all wood can come from sustainable sources. It is true, of course, that wood such as pine which comes from fast growing trees is far more likely to be truly sustainable than a wood such as oak which comes from an extremely slow growing tree.
It is also important to consider the source of the wood you are about to buy. Wood can come from a wide variety of different countries, and the policies of these countries can differ considerably. You are safe if you buy wood from Europe, as the European Parliament has laid down some tough legislation regarding forestry, and more trees are planted each year than are felled to be used as paper or wood. Wood from Europe is a genuinely renewable resource, although of course there is always the factor of the fossil fuel used to transport it.
As a general rule, any material which is grown or sourced locally is going to cause less damage to the environment than one which needs to be transported over a long distance. The transportation of products is almost universally carried out using systems which burn fossil fuels and cause a huge amount of environmental damage. Another consideration is that some types of timber are actually rare enough to be considered endangered, so it is essential to avoid using these as flooring materials. There are so many alternatives which are not endangered that to use them would be scandalous.
There are other options which involve the re-using of materials which have already seen life in one guise, and can now be used as flooring. A good example of this is recycled glass, which can be moulded into tiles and used as flooring. Although glass can be recycled, a lot of it still ends up being discarded and wasted, so there is a case for putting it to a more constructive use. It does have to be pointed out, however, that glass is better recycled, and that wood is the only material which creates truly sustainable flooring.
