Why Sustainable Forestry Is So Important To Our Future
Sustainable forestry is absolutely essential if we are to produce a better world for our children. Wood will continue to be a raw material which we need to use on a regular and ongoing basis, and we will continue to have a need for it. In addition to this, the tropical rain forests are like the lungs of the planet. Without them, there will be dramatic climatic change which will mean a reduction in the quality of life across the entire world, and an increase in the serious climatic disturbances which lead to massive loss of life and economic despair on a huge scale.
The need for sustainable forestry is well enough known at the highest levels of government, and there are many international conferences held to determine its future. These conferences try to meet the overriding objective of developing our world in a sustainable way, so that future generations can reap the benefits of what we do, rather than suffer its effects. The need is clearly there for the planet to be developed in a way which will not use up limited resources which will then not be available to future generations.
An often quoted principle is that of the interlinking of social, economic and environmental values, in the quest to leave the forests for future generations in way which will allow them to get the same benefits which we receive today. Forests are assets which can provide a great economic benefit to local communities. They can be run as profitable businesses, creating wealth and providing employment for local people. If the forests are managed in a sustainable way, and can be regenerated by planting trees as other trees are cut, this economic benefit can be sustained.
This consistent and sustainable management of forests can have spin off benefits in the local community. Communities in which employment is plentiful suffer far fewer social problems than deprived areas, and need far less policing. A sustainable forest policy helps to create a much improved environment for the local community to enjoy. The three pronged development is self reinforcing, as one benefit helps to sustain the others. The key, as with most environmental projects, is not to become greedy and deplete resources at a faster pace than they can be replaced.
Sustainable timber is absolutely necessary for the continuation of life as we know it. Business needs paper on a massive scale, and the supply simply must continue. That may not be the most important consideration, but it is a consideration nonetheless. Another vitally important use of timber is in construction, and without it many more harmful and less sustainable materials are used. The construction industry is one area where an increased use of timber will have great benefits for future generations, and one of the most important reasons for developing sustainable forestry.
