How We Can Meet The Challenge Of Sustainable Living
Sustainable living is our greatest challenge at this time in our history. We have reached a point where we threaten to consume and exhaust the very resources on which we need to depend, committing racial suicide in the process. We as a race need to raise our awareness of sustainability issues very quickly, and we need to make sure that vested interests are sublimated to the needs of the species as a whole. We can evolve from our present level of understanding to create a better world for ourselves, and a future of hope for our children.
One of the greatest of all the challenges facing us is the challenge to create sustainable systems of energy. The fossil fuel which we are currently using is highly damaging to the environment, and is only in limited supply. We cannot keep operating in the way we are now, unless we want to face a situation where our resources run out completely, and our entire economic and cultural system grinds to a halt. The development of renewable energy sources, to the degree where they can provide all of the energy we need, is essential to our very survival.
We have two great resources which we can and should use to achieve this, and they are resources which complement each other. The most talked about of all renewable energy sources is solar power, and with good reason. The sun is an unlimited resource which we can harness to our great advantage. Complementing the sun is wind power. Wind has the power to drive turbines which produce electricity. It is interesting to note that in tropical climates where the sun is strong, there is little wind, and in the extreme polar and temperate regions where there is little sun, the wind is prodigious.
Also, at times of the day where the sun is strongest, the wind tends to abate, and at night when there is no sun it tends to pick up. A system based on solar and wind energy will therefore be effective throughout the whole world, even though one or the other may dominate to a considerable degree. The use of hydrogen as a type of storage battery completes the picture, and gives us a potential system for providing the world with its full energy needs with no pollution and no possibility of the supply running out.
Of course energy is only one aspect of sustainable living, albeit a very important one. Equally strong challenges exist in supplying the world's population with shelter and food. Use of sustainable materials in construction is essential if we are to use our resources to their full potential. The problem of food is probably the hardest to solve, but sustainable organic farming and improved distribution can create a marked improvement in the quality of life of the entire population of the world. It is up to us to create a better future through sustainable living.
