Why Sustainable Paper Is So Important, And How It Can Be Made
Sustainable paper is necessary if business is to continue in its current form. The paper production methods which are in use in the world today are not sustainable. That is, they cannot continue indefinitely into the future. They are simply too demanding on resources to allow the assets being used up to be replaced on an ongoing basis. This will inevitably lead to the supply drying up if we do not take action to find a better way of supplying the paper which we all need in out daily lives. The world is, at last, taking action in a meaningful way to tackle these problems.
It has to be said that the electronic office, which some people predicted would lead to a vast reduction in the use of paper worldwide, has in fact had the opposite effect. The ease with which documents can be printed has led to more paper being used. It is extremely rare for important documents to be printed off and stored as hard copies at least once during their life, and often they can be printed many times. Modern offices use a huge amount of paper, and while reducing this may be possible to some degree, it is clear that we need to find other answers to maintain our lifestyle.
Our use of new paper can be vastly reduced by the use of recycled paper. Recycled paper was, at one some, so patently inferior to brand new virgin pulp paper that it was fundamentally unusable. The machines in offices which need to use paper demanded a higher quality than this system could provide. Now, recycled paper is of such a quality that it can be readily used in any office machinery. Recycled paper has other spin off costs to the environment, such as the increased fossil fuel demand for transportation and processing, but these factors can be controlled. In time, transportation can be by means which use electricity from renewable sources.
There is also a tremendous possibility for using material other than trees to produce paper. There are other plants which can be used in this way, which take less time and space to grow, and which emit less pollution into the atmosphere and water supplies. Perennial herbaceous plants need to become the focus of a great deal of our paper production. Agricultural waste can also be turned into paper, as can cotton waste from the clothing industry.
A more creative use for material which would otherwise simply be discarded can have untold benefits for society. Maintaining the tropical rainforests is essential for the healthy survival of the planet, and the entire human race, We need international cooperation to ensure that this much needed resource is used in a sustainable way. Ensuring that as many trees are planted as are harvested, finding other materials from which paper can be made, and recycling are all ways in which we can create sustainable paper.
