Why The World Desperately Needs A Sustainable Policy
Sustainable policy is necessary if there is to be social cohesion in any group, whether the group is a small housing estate or the entire human race. We are now seeing an increased awareness of the need for a sustainable policy at a global level, because it is obvious that we will suffer a dramatic loss in quality of life if we do not have one. The resources which we are using to mould our society are not infinite, and there needs to be a dramatic change in the way we live if we are to survive and progress.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the issue of energy. The fossil fuels on which the developed world is surviving are in limited supply, and even their current use is having extremely harmful side effects. It is not only necessary to evolve into a new way of generating power, it is necessary to do so while we still have enough of the traditional fuel left to make the transition. We are now finally seeing evidence of awareness at government level, and investment in both research prototype projects, and the development of a renewable energy infrastructure.
In other areas such as farming, there is a lot less sign of progress. There is certainly a widespread fear amongst many in authority that a wholesale commitment to organic farming would threaten the food supply to a significant degree. Organic farming yields may be lower than the current yields from chemical based farming, but it does represent the only possibility for long term sustainable farming. The truth is going to have to be faced at some point, and it may as well be now.
Sustainable policy is also needed in construction, as it extremely expensive to have to continually knock down property and build again. Many of the materials which have been used in construction over recent decades are artificial and plastic, and will have terrible trouble bio-degrading at the end of their useful life. A return to more natural products will be in the best interests of everyone. By using materials such as wood, you are not only reducing the risk of a health problem due to a reaction, and lessening dramatically the damage caused to the environment, you are also supporting genuinely sustainable industry. This is especially true if the wood has come originally from Europe.
It is recommended that a sustainable policy be introduced at all levels, as every human being and every organization can make an impact of some kind. At the global level, the implementation of such a policy has now become crucial to the continued survival of the species. If we continue to consume resources at a faster rate than they can be replenished, we will run out. It is that simple. Even now, we are just not seeing enough commitment from world leaders to developing a sustainable policy.
